First Day of Classes
The fall I like is not
The full-breasted
Farmstand one
But the browning
Seedpod that finds your
Coffee cup top
Signup sheets
Backpacks of
Bulk supplies
Students sleeping
Drooling on the
Rec room floor
Heavy from vaping
And working in
Fast food
From my office
Overlooking the
Loading bay
I watch seagulls
Far from home swoop
The wasteland
Raccoons rummaging
The dumpster for
Day-old doughnuts
Am I the gleaner
Looking for what the
Harvester left
The student who
Missed class
Failed out
Or am I the hook
Gathering sheaves
Of papers from
The kids plump with
Pumpkin spice flavor
Ready for school
When I retire to
A sheet cake serenade
Will they remember
My Shakespeare class
Or demerits, detentions
They didn’t deserve
At start of term
I wonder as I winnow
Will I reap or sow
