The announcement from Fred’s University of an overhaul of their dated Sexual Harassment Policy was upstaged by a new graduate-student-produced Educational Cat Video entitled “How Not To Harass Your Students.”
The graduate student feline filmmakers explained that their goal is to make the rules for avoiding harassment simple, whereas the university is making the rules complicated.
Over the past decade, piecemeal changes and halfhearted compliance reviews of the Harassment Policy have resulted in a patchwork document with multiple fonts, type sizes and annoying shaded blocks where the text cannot be read. Administrators have also cut and pasted material from the internet which often fails to load properly on the university website resulting in frequent downtime.
The Fred’s University Dean of Students intends to fix all that someday. In the meantime, the new policy statement is designed to retroactively vindicate faculty and administrators who are currently under investigation for harassment and to protect future defendants by creating a miasma of ambiguous and confusing rules that are easy to manipulate.
Included on the committee, that worked on the new document, are three in-house lawyers, two faculty who have been accused of harassment, and zero students. The student creators of the Educational Cat Video remain anonymous though they posted the cat video on the Association of Imaginary Schools’ Youtube channel.
A handwritten poster in the Hall of Graduate Studies promises the students will relinquish the password to the Association of Imaginary Schools Youtube channel when students are allowed to participate in a new fair Harassment Policy.
