This week at the Museum of Insider Art alum Jane Forbes, class of ‘88, will be giving a lecture on her homage to her beloved horse, Bordeaux.
The event is underwritten by Old Money Bank, courtesy of CEO and Richard E Rich Trustee Winston Reynolds, and the opening is catered by The Golden Lobster, a biodynamic catering startup run out of the guest house of Binky Lowell, class of ‘90. The artist’s niece, India Forbes, class of 2015, is the guest curator of the event which will happen at the kickoff weekend for the new capital campaign, “Make Richard Rich Rich Again”.
Artist Jane Forbes is also on the Board of the Museum of Insider Art, and points out that the rise of Outsider Art has resulted in the gradual marginalizing of Insider Art. She argues in her Manifesto For Insider Art, published by the exclusive imprint Secret Key and edited by her onetime Richard Rich roommate, that Insider Art is in danger of being devalued and forgotten.
Forbes sees the task of preserving and cultivating Insider Art before it is lost to history as an urgent project that is vitally important to the very survival of the art world.
With the decline of arts education in public schools, private school students like those at Richard E Rich, and those Insiders with an expensive liberal arts education, will soon be the only ones with a knowledge of art history. Insiders are also able to visit art sites around the world, and as a result, bring a broader and more diverse perspective than Outsider Artists.
Perhaps even more critical is the fact that Insiders are the collectors, sponsors and donors who fund the art world. Ignoring Insiders threatens to undermine the institutional structure that supports all arts.
The collection on display at the Museum will include collage and montage pieces that both pay tribute to Bordeaux and to equestrian art in general. Lest people think all Insider Art is stuffy and hands-off, Forbes has included multiple interactive elements including Pin The Heart on The Pony and Shovel my Stall. India Forbes will oversee the gallery for the length of Jane’s exhibit while the official curator is at the Outsider Art Fair Basel. You can see the campus map here.
