Pencil Cup: Friday Office Poem

Kindergarten naptime
Limp bodies laid out
Like in a crime
They sleep in doubt

I’m their minder
And can neither
Snooze nor leave here
I must watch every dreamer

Should there ever
Be a shooter
Could I be clever
And stop the intruder

Would I lie down
For the sleepers
Stand the ground
Against the reaper

I’d rather burn
Than be buried
Give me an urn
And make it hurried

Or put my ashes
In a pencil cup
When the door latches
And my time is up

NOTE

The US Government Accountability Office report on K-12 Education Characteristics of School Shootings found that “The location of the shootings more often took place outside the school building than inside the school building, but shootings inside were more deadly.”  Studies show an increased anti-depressant use in communities exposed to school shootings.
