This Book Could Save Your Life

A wall of books
On the north side
Of your shelter
Is a warming
Windbreak

If you are
Shipwrecked with
Enemies read aloud
To keep them
From killing you

After a dictator
Locks down
Your device
A book is your
Only book

Hollow out
An encyclopedia
With a knife
For a hole to hide
Your flash drive

Solitary confinement
Is a great place
For memorizing lines
To hold your head
Inside your mind

While you wait
In the fallout
Shelter you can
Paste up pages
As wallpaper

When nuclear winter
Drops snow
On the dessert
You can burn
Your books for fire

Sitting in the
Outhouse in
The Apocalypse
You will still want
Toilet paper

When you are
Starving know
Old books are bound
With horse glue
It’s nutritious

Boil down the spines
To make a paste
Strain out paper
Cool and cut
Into bars

If you are too tired
To cook
At the end
Of the world
Eat pages raw

NOTE

“Our paper books have lasted hundreds of years on our shelves and are still readable. Without active maintenance, we will be lucky if our digital books last a decade.”
